Keep your Gadgets Safe During Snowmageddon 2015
Millions braced themselves for #Snowmageddon2015 and the 2-3 feet of snow and freezing temperatures that came along with it this week. While New York City didn’t get all the snow they anticipated, there and much of the Northeast United States is experiencing extremely low, freezing temperatures – and they’re here to stay.
You may not realize it, but freezing temperatures can be extremely dangerous to electronic gadgets like your laptop, smartphone or tablet. That’s right, winter storms can damage more than just our motivation to move from the couch. Follow our tips on keeping gadgets safe during extreme weather and you can “weather” the storm!
Keep them out of the cold. This one might seem obvious, but just in case it’s not: keep your gadgets where it is nice and warm! Don’t leave your phone, laptop or tablet in the trunk of your car, in a room that isn’t heated or anywhere else where it can get too cold. Having an electronic gadget sitting in cold temperatures for extended periods of time can cause damage to screens and the hard drive can actually freeze once temperatures dip below the freezing level.
If you have no other option than to leave your electronics in a cold space, wrap it up in layers just as you would yourself! Make sure your gadget is properly outfitted with a case and then wrap it up in layers like a blanket or sweater.
Power down. If you aren’t using your gadget, make sure to turn it off to keep it safe. Otherwise, if damage occurs to the hard drive, you could lose all your important data and documents.
Warm it up. If your gadget is left in the cold, don’t turn it on right away. Instead, let it warm up and come to room temperature before turning it on.
Stay charged. Cold weather sucks the life out of the batteries of your favorite devices, so be sure to carry extra chargers in your car or office for emergencies. If there’s extreme weather outside, make sure to keep your device charged as much as possible before going anywhere.
